The History of the Supreme Court: While some citizens may find the United States Supreme Court to be a distant institution, nothing could be farther from the truth. During its annual sessions, the Court addresses a myriad of issues of immediate and enduring importance, including eminent domain, freedom of expression, the death penalty, and so on. With funding from New York Life, this very thorough website was created to complement a major television series on the history of the Supreme Court that will soon appear on PBS. The site's materials were written by educators from across the country, and they present the institution's history thematically, thereby making it easier to use in the classroom. Within each one of the site's sections, users will find essays and teaching materials on gender equality, social rights, personal liberties, and equal access to schools. The site also includes a very nice interactive timeline of landmark cases handed down since 1792. Finally, the site also includes a searchable encyclopedia of terms and court cases of note.

"Opened in 1829 as part of a controversial movement to change the behavior of inmates through 'confinement in solitude with labor,' Eastern State Penitentiary quickly became one of the most expensive and most copied buildings in the young United States. It is estimated that more than 300 prisons worldwide are based on the Penitentiary's wagon-wheel, or 'radial' floor plan. Some of America's most notorious criminals were held in the Penitentiary's vaulted, sky-lit cells, including bank robber Willie Sutton and Al Capone. After 142 years of consecutive use, Eastern State Penitentiary was completely abandoned in 1971, and now stands, a lost world of crumbling cell blocks and empty guard towers. "In the 1981 film Escape from New York, the entire island of Manhattan had been converted to a self-sufficient, walled off open air prison, devoid of guards & cells. The fiction of the film bears an alarming similarity to the reality of life in San Pedro Prison, a walled off, police-free convict slum in Bolivia's capital city, La Paz. This fascinating/horrifying experiment in criminal justice is the feature of a 2003 eponymous documentary; some of the details include the story of a drug kingpin, unhappy with his cell, who had a second story constructed to allow more breathing room; or the prison soccer team, sponsored by coca-cola, or even the non-prisoner children of the imprisoned, who roam the streets of San Pedro ('At least this way the parents live with their kids, and the family stays together. Their basic mission is to 'assist Member States intheir struggle against illicit drugs, crime and terrorism.' It’s a broad mission, and in order to inform the public and policy experts about their work, they have created this site. In the center of the homepage, visitors will find recent reports of note, including their annual Word Drug Report. Identity Theft Resource Center: "These days, persons who find themselves the victim of an identity theft have a number of resources they can draw on to deal with their predicament. In 1997, things were quite different, and at that time Linda Foley found herself victimized by this crime. In conjunction with my presentation at the International Visual Sociology Association Conference, I thought I would begin posting various visual images on The Panopticon to illicit responses from those involved with this BLOG. As I see it, those who study crime, justice and criminality are the one's who can seriously engage in a continuous discourse about the representation and re-presentation of imagery that exists in our social world, whether it be created by social control agents or by researchers in the field, these images inform us about who we are as a culture, as a global community.

I have started this posting with an image that is very relevant to any criminal justice course, it is the modern method of execution in the United States and this table, with the straps and white sheet and pillow can be very powerful, but creates so many questions not only about who will lie on the table and the legal processes surrounding executions, but for those who view this table from the other side, the witnesses to the execution, the correctional personnel that are present as well as the victim(s) who are no longer physically present to be witness.

"Khaled El-Masri, a German national, was abducted on a trip to Macedonia. He was detained and interrogated by Macedonian agents, then handed over to U.S. officials and secretly flown to Afghanistan where he was locked-up in a U.S.-run prison for four months. After el-Masri’s captors realized they had mistaken him for someone else, he was then shuttled to somewhere in the Balkans, driven for hours in a car and finally left by the side of a road in Albania.

U.S. authorities detained Maher Arar, a Canadian citizen of Syrian descent, at New York’s JFK airport while he was in transit on his way home to Canada. He was interrogated for several days and denied access to counsel and family. He was flown against his will to Jordan where he reports being beaten during detention. Arar was then forcibly transferred to Syria where he was held for ten months and reportedly tortured. Canadian officials secured his release and he’s now back with his family in Canada. The Syrian government acknowledged that they took Arar as a favor to the Americans and that during his detention shared information with them.

Both Arar and El-Masri filed law suits in the United States pertaining to their rendition. Both cases were thrown out on national security grounds. The number of people like Arar and El-Masri who have been rendered over the past five years by the U.S. government could be in the hundreds. Familial relations inside and outside of the prison walls have always been a major focus of my research. It is noted by many in the field of criminology that the maintenance of solid family relationships is crucial not only for family members during the incarceration period, but also for the reentry of the offender into society upon release. Those with strong family ties during incarceration and upon reentry are less likely to engage in further criminal activity upon release than those with conflicted familial relationships.
